A battery grip lives or dies by its electrical contacts and how snugly it seats against your camera's mount plate. The verified US-seller options run $20 to $70; anything priced well under that usually saved money by using bare metal contacts and a plastic mount screw that will strip.
What to look for in a good battery grip
- Contact pins. Look for gold-plated or at least clearly finished contact pins, since bare metal corrodes and starts causing intermittent power or misfires within months.
- Mount plate material. The tripod socket and camera-mount screw should be metal, not molded plastic threads that round off the first time you tighten them with a coin.
- Battery door latch. A good grip has a spring-loaded latch with a real click; cheap ones use a friction tab that loosens over weeks and lets the door rattle or pop open.
- Secondary controls. Test the vertical shutter button and command dial for a crisp, distinct press rather than mushy travel, since sloppy secondary controls are the first thing manufacturers cheapen out on.
