What to look for in a good camera filter
- Check the ring material. Brass or stainless steel rings thread on smoothly and back off just as easily, while cheap aluminum rings tend to bind or cross-thread on your lens mount.
- Glass, not resin. Real optical glass is ground and polished flat, so a filter priced at the very bottom of the range is almost always acrylic or resin that scratches if you breathe on it wrong.
- Coating quality. Multi-coated glass kills glare and reflections, while single-coated or bare glass shows up as ghosting and hazy contrast the moment you shoot into light.
