What to look for in a good car stereo receiver
- Chassis and heat sink. Pick it up: a real receiver has a metal chassis and a heat sink on the back for the amp section, not a plastic shell that gets warm and warps in a hot car.
- Wiring harness gauge. Check the harness connector, factory-grade units use color-coded, decently gauged wire with a proper ISO or aftermarket plug, not thin unmarked strands twisted together.
- Tuner and reception specs. Look for a listed AM/FM tuner sensitivity spec and RDS support, cheap boards skip shielding and pull in static on weak stations.
