A decent cigar case comes down to what's actually holding the cigars and what's touching them, not just the outside shell. Cheap versions fake the leather, skip the cedar, and use a zipper or hinge that gives out after a few months of pocket use.
What to look for in a good cigar case
- Check the lining. Real cedar or cedar-lined interiors help regulate humidity and add a faint aroma; a plain nylon or foam liner does nothing but pad the box.
- Ring gauge fit. A case sized for 50 to 54 ring gauge won't hold a 60-ring cigar without crushing the wrapper, so check stated capacity against your usual smoke, not just how many slots it has.
- Material honesty. Full-grain or top-grain leather ages and develops a patina; bonded leather or PU cracks at the seams within a year, especially where the case flexes to close.
- Seams and hardware. Look for stitched or riveted seams and a metal zipper or snap; glued edges and plastic clasps are the first things to fail, usually right where the case gets carried in a pocket or bag.
