- Charging port standard. A tablet with a proprietary or oddly-shaped charging cable is a sign the maker is cutting costs on parts, USB-C is the baseline now.
- Software update window. Ask how many years of operating system updates are promised, a cheap tablet often ships with an OS version that's already two releases behind and never gets patched.
- Price as a signal. Verified US sellers in this category run $100 to $600, anything priced well under that floor is usually cutting the battery capacity or the internal storage to hit that number.
