A dvd disc lives or dies on its dye layer and reflective coating, not the label on the spindle. The $13 to $40 range we found from established US sellers buys discs with consistent dye and metal layers; anything priced well under that $13 floor is usually cutting one of those two corners.
What to look for in a good dvd disc
- Dye type. Phthalocyanine or advanced dye formulations hold data longer and resist light damage better than the cheap cyanine dye that cut-rate discs still use.
- Reflective layer. A silver or silver-alloy reflective layer resists oxidation, while the thin aluminum layer in bargain discs can develop pinholes and read errors within a couple of years.
- Speed rating accuracy. A disc rated 16x should actually burn cleanly at 16x; mislabeled speed ratings on knockoff spindles cause skipped sectors and failed burns on older drives.
- Capacity and labeling. Check that the listed capacity, 4.7GB single layer or 8.5GB dual layer, matches what the disc actually delivers, since some throwaway batches quietly ship under-spec dual layer discs mislabeled as full capacity.
