An electrolytic capacitor lives or dies by its temperature rating and how much ripple current it can actually absorb, not just the capacitance number printed on the case. Cheap versions fudge both, using thinner aluminum cans and less electrolyte fill to hit a price instead of a spec.
What to look for in a good electrolytic capacitor
- Temperature rating. Look for a 105°C rating printed on the case, since 85°C parts fail faster in anything that runs warm, like a power supply or amplifier.
- Ripple current spec. Check the datasheet ripple current number, not just voltage and capacitance, because undersized ripple handling is what makes a cap bulge and die early.
- Vent and case build. A real safety vent (the scored X or K on top) needs to be present and clean, since a missing or poorly stamped vent means the can splits messy instead of releasing pressure safely.
- Price as a signal. Legitimate US sellers here run $4 to $84 depending on size and rating, so a capacitor priced under that floor is a sign something got cut, usually electrolyte volume or case gauge.
