What to look for in a good fishing hooks

• Wire temper. Quality hooks use high-carbon steel tempered enough to spring back after flexing; bargain packs often bend permanently on the hookset and stay bent.
• Eye construction. Look for a fully welded or brazed eye rather than a wire loop left slightly open, since an open eye can straighten or let the line slip off under drag.
• Point and barb consistency. Chemically sharpened points hold an edge longer than cheap cut points, and in a real pack every hook should have the same barb angle, not a mix of blunt and sharp from the same box.
• What the price tells you. The going range for a legitimate seller here runs about $10 to $23; anything priced well under that usually means thinner wire gauge or a shorted count to hit a lower number.
