What to look for in a good flashlight

- Lumen claims. A light advertised at 5000 lumens for fifteen dollars is not telling the truth, since real output at that level needs a heat sink and driver that cost more than the whole knockoff.
- Battery compatibility. Look for standard cells like 18650, AA, or CR123 that you can buy anywhere, not a proprietary battery pack that gets discontinued a year after you buy the light.
- Waterproof rating. A specific IPX rating on the listing means the light was actually submerged and timed; the word waterproof by itself with no number means nobody tested it.
