What to look for in a good fuel gauge
- Resistance range match. Check whether the gauge is built for 240-33 ohm or 0-90 ohm senders, since a mismatch means the needle sits wrong no matter how much fuel is actually in the tank.
- Housing and seal. Look for a stainless or heavy ABS bezel with a gasket behind the face, not a thin snap-fit plastic ring that lets moisture creep in and fog the dial.
- Movement type. Air-core movements hold calibration longer than the cheaper bimetallic strip gauges, which drift after repeated heat cycles and start reading low even on a full tank.
- Price as a signal. Verified US sellers in this category run $17 to $72; anything priced well under that is usually cutting the sender range, the seal, or both to hit a number.
