What to look for in a good headlamp
- Lumens vs beam distance. A real listing gives you a beam distance in meters along with the lumen count, because raw lumens mean nothing without a lens and reflector that actually throw the light; if the listing only has a big lumen number and no distance spec, assume the number is invented.
- Water resistance rating. Look for an actual IPX number (IPX4 splashproof, IPX7 submersible) instead of the phrase 'water resistant' on its own, since that phrase has no legal definition and covers everything from a light drizzle to nothing at all.
- Strap and buckle. Pinch the headband: a decent one is wide elastic with a silicone grip strip on the inside so it doesn't slide down your forehead when you sweat, while the cheap ones use thin elastic that stretches out and a plastic buckle that cracks in the cold within a season.
- Lens and switch. A polycarbonate lens over the LED resists scratches and impact, while a cheap acrylic or thin plastic lens yellows and hazes within months and dulls the beam; run your thumb over the on/off button too, a mushy switch with no click is usually the first thing to fail.
