What to look for in a good pen nib
- Tipping material. Check that the tip is an actual iridium alloy ball fused to the nib, not just a sharpened point stamped into plain steel that will wear flat within weeks.
- Housing size and fit. A quality nib states its housing size, like a #5 or #6 standard, so it seats flush in the feed instead of leaving gaps that starve the ink flow.
- Slit and tine alignment. Hold it up to light: the slit should run dead straight and the tines should meet evenly, since a crooked slit is what causes skipping and railroading.
- Price floor. Real nibs from verified sellers start around $7 and run up to $199 for gold or specialty grinds, so anything priced under that floor skipped the finishing work somewhere.
