What to look for in a good ptz ip camera
- Optical vs digital zoom. Check the spec sheet for 'optical zoom' explicitly; a camera listed only as '20x zoom' with no optical number is almost always cropping the sensor and losing resolution as it zooms in.
- Pan-tilt motor build. Real PTZ units use geared stepper motors rated for continuous rotation and hundreds of thousands of cycles, while knockoffs use small hobby servos that grind, lag, and drift out of position after a few months.
- Housing and IP rating. Outdoor-rated models should list an IP66 or better rating on a die-cast aluminum or heavy polycarbonate housing; a thin plastic dome that flexes when you press on it will crack or fog within a season.
- ONVIF and NVR compatibility. Look for stated ONVIF Profile S or T compliance so the camera talks to third-party recorders and apps; cheap units often lock you into one buggy proprietary app with no update history.
