A wall mount only has one job: hold weight off a wall for years without creeping loose. The corners get cut in the steel gauge and the hardware, not the parts you can see, so a shiny finish tells you nothing about whether it'll still be level in a year.
What to look for in a good wall mount
- Weight rating margin. Don't buy a mount rated exactly for your TV's weight, look for one rated well above it, since a mount at its limit sags and drifts out of level over time.
- VESA hole pattern. Measure the actual hole spacing on the back of your TV or monitor and match it to the mount's stated VESA pattern, because 'universal' on the box often means slotted holes that never sit quite flush.
- Steel gauge and welds. Run a finger along the arm and bracket joints; a solid mount uses thicker gauge steel with continuous welds, while a cheap one uses thin stamped metal with spot welds that flex under load.
- Included hardware. Check that lag bolts long enough to bite into a wall stud are actually in the box, since drywall anchors alone will pull out under a mounted TV's weight.
