Beading wire is graded by strand count and coating quality, not just diameter, and that's exactly where the cheap stuff cuts corners. A knockoff will hide or omit the strand count entirely and slap a nylon coating on so thin it flakes off after a few wears.
What to look for in a good beading wire
- Strand count. Look for a stated count like 7, 19, or 49 strands; more strands mean the wire drapes instead of kinking, and listings that dodge this number are usually hiding a cheap 3-strand core.
- Coating condition. Run a finger down the wire in the photos if you can; a good nylon coating looks glassy and even, while a bad one shows dull patches or tiny cracks where it will peel and expose the metal to your skin.
- Diameter consistency. A stated .019 or .024 inch diameter should hold steady along the whole spool; cheap wire tends to swell and thin out in spots, which is why it kinks at the same three places every time.
- What the price tells you. Legitimate US sellers in this category run about $6 to $20 a spool; anything priced below that is almost always thinner core wire or an unstated strand count dressed up with generic packaging.
