Craft tape quality comes down to two things: what the backing is made of and whether the adhesive holds without gumming up your scissors or scorching your paper. Cheap knockoffs cut corners on both, using thin, brittle paper and adhesive that either won't stick or won't let go.
What to look for in a good craft tape
- Tear test. Good washi and craft tape tears clean and straight by hand; if you need scissors every time, the paper stock is too thin or too tough.
- Adhesive residue. Quality tape lifts off scrapbook paper and photos without pulling fibers or leaving a sticky ghost line behind, cheap adhesive does one or the other.
- Roll consistency. Check that the tape unwinds at a consistent width and doesn't curl or cinch up on the roll, uneven winding is a sign of a rushed production run.
- Price floor. Verified US sellers in this category run about $7 to $26 a roll; anything priced well under that is usually where the corner-cutting shows up first.
