A beaded bracelet cord lives or dies on two things: consistent diameter and how well it holds a knot after the bracelet's been on a wrist for a month. Cheap versions wobble in thickness along the spool and use elastic that's already half-dead out of the bag, so beads slide, gap, or the whole thing snaps at the first stretch.
What to look for in a good beaded bracelet cord
- Check the diameter. Run the cord between your fingers along its length; if it thins and thickens unevenly, beads will sit crooked and the weak spots will be where it eventually breaks.
- Know your material. Elastic cord should have real stretch memory and snap back flat, not stay stretched out; waxed polyester or nylon should feel slightly tacky and stiff enough to hold a knot without help.
- Test the knot. Tie a surgeon's knot and tug hard; cord that's too slick lets knots slip loose over time, and cord that's too stiff will crack at the knot point instead of flexing.
