A real black light bulb puts out actual UV-A wavelength, not just a purple-tinted glow that looks moody in a dark room but does nothing under a poster or a scorpion hunt. The cheap versions skip the UV-filtering glass coating entirely and just tint the glass, so you get color without the function.
What to look for in a good black light bulb
- Check the wavelength. Look for a stated output in the 365 to 395 nanometer range; if the listing only says 'purple' or 'UV effect' with no number, assume it's dyed glass, not a filtered UV source.
- Wood's glass coating. Genuine black lights use a cobalt-treated glass filter (called Wood's glass) that blocks visible light and passes UV; cheap ones use a surface dye that fades or scratches off after a few months of handling.
- Base and fit. A standard E26 screw base means it'll work in any household fixture; odd or undersized bases are a sign the bulb was made to a minimum spec, not a standard one.
- What the price gap buys. In this category the trustworthy sellers run $8 to $28; anything priced below that floor is usually cutting the phosphor coating or the glass filter, the two parts that actually make it a black light.
