What to look for in a good clip on light

• Clamp tension and jaw. Squeeze the clamp yourself if you can, a real one has a metal spring and rubber or foam padding on the jaw so it grips a headboard or shelf without marring it or slipping loose overnight.
• Neck and hinge. A gooseneck or hinged arm should hold whatever angle you set it to, if it droops under the weight of the light head within a day that's a sign of thin-gauge wire or a cheap hinge screw.
• Heat and housing. Check whether the head is vented plastic or metal, a light that runs warm after twenty minutes and has no venting is a knockoff cutting corners on the driver or heat sink.
• Price as a signal. Legitimate sellers in this category mostly land between $10 and $40, anything priced well under that is usually where the corner-cutting shows up first, in the clamp spring or the cord insulation.
