What to look for in a good document scanner

• Feed rollers and rubber. Check whether the automatic document feeder uses replaceable rubber rollers or a fixed plastic wheel, because plastic wears smooth after a few hundred pages and starts feeding two sheets at once.
• Sensor type. Look for a stated CIS or CCD sensor and an optical resolution number, not just an interpolated one, since cheap units often advertise a software-boosted figure that adds no real detail.
• Bundled software. A real scanner ships with actual OCR software and drivers that get updated, while a knockoff usually points you to a generic download page that stops working after the next OS update.
• Price band tells you something. US-based sellers we found for this category run about $145 to $436, and anything priced well under that floor is usually cutting the roller assembly, the sensor, or both to hit that number.
