What to look for in a good coffee substitute
- Read the ingredient line. A real coffee substitute names its ingredient, chicory root, roasted barley, dandelion root, not just 'roasted grain blend,' which is usually code for whatever filler was cheapest that week.
- Check the grind. Instant versions should dissolve clean in hot water with no gritty residue at the bottom of the cup; a coarse, uneven grind means it was processed fast and cheap.
- Look for a roast or best-by date. Roasted grains go stale and flat within months, so a bag with no date stamped on it is a bag that could have been sitting in a warehouse since last year.
