What to look for in a good cutting mat
- Layer construction. Quality mats are multi-layer PVC that lets the surface reseal itself; a cheap mat is molded in one thin layer and keeps a visible scar every time you cut.
- Grid accuracy. The printed grid lines should measure true to scale for cutting and squaring fabric or paper; knockoffs often print grids that drift a millimeter or more, which throws off anything you're trying to square up.
- Thickness and flatness. A real mat runs at least 3mm thick and lies flat on a table without curling at the corners; thin mats warp fast and start sliding around under a ruler.
