- Base metal and threading. Run your thumb over the threads before you buy, a cheap aluminum base strips or cross-threads in the socket while brass holds up over years of swapping bulbs.
- Filament winding. Hold the bulb to the light and check the filament, a tight coiled-coil filament runs brighter and lasts longer than the loose single strand you get in bottom-shelf bulbs.
- Rated hours on the box. A legitimate bulb states its rated life in hours, usually 1000 to 1500, and a box with no hour rating at all is usually a sign nobody tested it.
