A wall mounting kit lives or dies on the steel gauge of its plate and the load rating stamped on the box, not the glossy photo of a TV floating on a wall. The cheap versions hit that $10 floor by using thin stamped brackets and generic hardware bags with no real weight rating printed anywhere.
What to look for in a good wall mounting kit
- Check the weight rating. A legitimate kit lists a maximum weight capacity in pounds and a VESA hole pattern range, not just 'fits most TVs'.
- Look at the hardware. Real kits include graded lag bolts and washers sized for your studs, while knockoffs pack generic drywall screws that strip out under load.
- Wall plate thickness. Run a finger over the metal plate; a quality mount uses cold-rolled steel around 1/8 inch thick, cheap ones flex when you press on them.
- Tilt and swivel joints. On full-motion arms, the pivot points should be secured with locking nuts, not just friction, or the arm will sag within months.
